˜AN OTTOMAN DAGGER (KHANJAR), TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY with curved double-edged blade of finely watered steel, decorated on each face with gold koftgari scrollwork and with a lengthy central inscription and two calligraphic cartouches on the front, carved marine ivory hilt (age cracks) decorated with faceted pastes in raised settings on the front, in its wooden scabbard encased in silver chased with scrolling tendrils, flowers and foliage against a finely punched and matted ground, the front applied with an additional openwork panel at the forte encrusted with pastes, and the reverse with a small pierced loop for suspension 30.4 cm; 12 in blade Provenance Sotheby's, 16th April 1987, lot 144 The long inscription are Turkish verses (not all deciphered) on the subject of a dagger. In the cartouches above and below this: ameli (sic) 'izzet ("Work of 'Izzet").
