‡ A FINE GOLD-AND SILVER-MOUNTED GARNET-ENCRUSTED SHORT SWORD (KASTANE), SRI LANKA, 19TH CENTURY with short curved single-edged blade, elaborate silver gilt hilt cast and chased in low relief, comprising a pair of langets decorated with foliage, a pair of arms formed with Simha head terminals, quillon and knuckle guard formed en suite, knuckle-guard issuant from the latter and with matching terminal, pronounced pommel formed as a large Simha head, enriched throughout with garnets and rock crystal, in its silver gilt scabbard decorated en suite and with four loops for suspension, in a 20th century Asprey & Co presentation case 29.5 cm; 11 5/8 in blade For related examples see Hales 2013, pp. 180-1, nos. 427-432.
