Black Panther Study Sets Record for Pompon

On 13 April 2021, by Anne Doridou-Heim

This Black Panther, a study for a bronze, is signed by François Pompon and has achieved a world record for a work on paper by the artist.

You can find the bronze of this Black Panther, ears pricked and here drawn in ink wash (47 x 66.5 cm/18.5 x 26.18 in) by François Pompon (1855-1933) in the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts, holder of an important collection of the artist from Burgundy. The pencil markings on tracing paper demonstrate that this is a preparatory work, a practice which the animal sculptor tended to employ. However, it would be an understatement to say that his studies are rare on the market: only three are referenced on the Artnet website. The big cat advanced with a sure step towards a world record for a work on paper, at €40,225, on Friday 5 March at Drouot (Paris), under the hammer of Villanfray & Associés.
