A fine score for an intimist scene by Mai-Thu

On 19 July 2019, by Philippe Dufour

Featuring an unusual subject for the Vietnamese artist and dating from his popular period, around 1940, a musical garden scene tripled its high estimate.

Mai Trung Thu or Mai Thu (1906-1980), Jeunes musiciennes danseuses dans un jardin (Young women musician dancers in a garden), ca. 1940, ink and gouache on silk, 95 x 68 cm.
Result: €327,000

€327,010 went to this group of young beauties, one playing an instrument, the others dancing, seen against a landscape with a lake and a pontoon. An excellent score, then, which now takes first place among those recently awarded to Mai-Thu for his musical subjects (source: Artnet). For those really keen to land a work by the painter, a more affordable work came up next: the 1976 Grand-mère et enfant endormi (Grandmother and sleeping child). One of the artist's favourite themes, with a frame he made himself, this was knocked down for €20,978.
