The Art of Jewelry According to André Derain

On 09 September 2021, by Vanessa Schmitz-Grucker

Incised “exemplaire d’auteur ½”, a 23 ct gold pendant by the Fauvist painter is expected to fetch €17,000/23,000 at Adam's in Dublin on September 14.

André Derain’s (1880-1954) interest in making jewelry after 1945 stemmed from his shift to sculpture. He asked a friend, jeweler François Hugo, to create ten sculptural pieces for his wife. The Fauvist painter did the original drawings in lead. Six were made in 23 ct gold, but Derain died in 1954 before the project could be completed. Hugo worked on it in 1966 and 1967. About 2012, Ateliers Hugo cast this 23 ct gold pendant from the 1965 plaster. Incised “exemplaire d’auteur ½” (Artist Proof ½), it is expected to fetch €17,000/23,000 at Adam's in Dublin on September 14.
