"Encrier aux tortues"
circa 1875
Encrier de forme ovoïde en bronze à patines brune et dorée. Deux tortues sont situées sur le couvercle abattant, les deux autres - interprétées comme dans la mythologie chinoise - soutiennent le réceptacle en formant base.

Dans la mythologie chinoise la tortue est associée au lièvre, elle est aussi celle qui porte le monde. De plus les carapaces de tortues font parties des premiers supports de l'écriture en Chine, il y a 3500 ans environ.

Two turtles are decorating the lid, while the two others - like in chinese mythology - support the spherical receptacle and are forming a base.

In Chinese mythology the turtle is associated with the hare, it’s also the one that carries the world. Furthermore, turtle shells are among the first support of writing in China, about 3500 years ago
