HAMECON Kwakiutl, Côte Nord-Ouest, Colombie britanique vers 1880 - 1900 Bois, fer, cordelette et fibres végétales Hauteur : 25,5 ; Ecart : 7 cm Deux empiècements de bois maintenus ensemble grâce à une cordelette finement enroulée et nouée constituent l'hameçon. La hampe est sculptée d'une figure anthropomorphe pouvant être assimilée à un chamane, un esprit anthropomorphe ou bien un esprit animal ayant pris une forme anthropomorphe. Aussi, comprenons-nous l'évocation rituelle présentée dans "Tlingit Halibut Hooks: an analysis of the visual symbols of a rite of passage" de Aldona Jonaitis, où la prière est inhérente à la pêche : "This halibut fisherman is doing two things: manipulating and engaging in a fishing ritulism. Ritualism occurs in all fishing in the form of recitation of certain types of prayers which communicate the fisherman's respect for his catch. [...] If the fisherman omits the ritualistic prayers appropriate to the species, the fish will be offended by that disrespect and others of that species will not allow themselves to be caught." L'ardillon est en fer. Ce type d'hameçon était employé pour la pêche au flétan.
