Referenced in the Dictionnaire des ventes d'art faites en France et à l'étranger pendant les XVIIIe et XIXe siècles by Hippolyte Mireur. In 1855, in the Gazette "Les Beaux-Arts en Europe", Théophile Gautier described Isabey, this singer of romantic painting, as follows: "Under his alert and lively touch everything comes alive, everything sparkles; nothing clumsy, nothing heavy, nothing thick, nothing stupid... He has, in his way of applying the color, a dazzling brilliance, a driving verve, a strange bite; he burns the canvas; his fast and nervous touch has the certainty of a freehand initials".
