MÜNSTER, Sebastian. Cosmographey. Oder beschreibung aller Länder.... des gantzen Erdbodens. Basel, S. Henricpetri, 1592. Folio. 355x255 mm. 17th-century calf binding, gold friezes on spine. Pages [28], 1421, [2, colophon and letterpress mark]. Frontispiece in red and black with Portrait of the Author; 26 woodcut maps on double page, including 2 maps of the world, numbered I-XXVI; 65 woodcuts (2 folded, 63 on double page), with maps and plans of cities, divided into books I - VI; more than 1030 engravings in the text depicting maps and views of cities, maps, portraits, coats of arms, historical scenes, costumes, animals, plants. Ornate initials and culs-de-lampe engraved on wood, letterpress mark on verso of colophon. Defects and traces of use to binding, restoration to spine, renewed guard sheets; lower corner of title restored; old restoration to pages 835-836, trace of creases on two folded views. Diffuse light browning and sporadically some staining, very few small tears in margins, overall good copy. Rare and important German edition. Like the 1588 edition, the 26 general maps have been redrawn and some 400 figures have been added to the text. In particular, the maps showing the New World have been drastically revised: the modern world map and map of the Americas give a much more accurate idea of the Americas than the primitive maps used in the 1544-1578 editions. The extensive apparatus includes a full-page map of Europe with imperial insignia and two large fold-out views of Heidelberg and Vienna. The double-sided woodcuts show, among other things, views of Augsburg, Basel, Cusco, Eger, Florence, Frankfurt am Main and Frankfurt on the Oder, Genoa, Jerusalem, Cairo, Cologne, Constantinople, Naples, Lindau, Lüneburg, Meissen, Paris, Parma, Rome, Speyer, Stettin, Strasbourg, Trier, Ulm, Venice, and Würzburg, as well as marine wonders and maps of Pomerania and Swabia.Burmeister, Sebastian Münster, eine Bibliographie, 1964: pp. 70-73; Graesse IV, p. 622; McLean, The Cosmographia of Sebastian Münster, Ashgate, 2007; Horch, Gutenberg-Jahrbuch, 1974, pp. 139-151; D 16, M 6705; Alden-L. 592/33; Sabin, America: XII, no. 51394.
