This work is based on the legend of the Echternach fiddler, which tells the story of Veit, a fiddler who had recently converted to Christianity, and his wife, who went on a decade-long pilgrimage at the time of Saint Willibrord. Upon his return, Veit was the only one to return to the Luxembourg town of Echternach, his wife having disappeared. Accused by his in-laws of murdering his wife, Veit was sentenced to death. His last request was to be allowed to take his violin to his death cell, where he played music so beautiful that it enchanted everyone in a frenzied dance. Finally, Veit quietly walked away and was never seen again in the area, leaving behind people still caught up in the dance. Veit's parents continued to dance non-stop for a year, until Saint Willibrord helped them stop this mesmerizing dance. This dance became so popular that it became a local tradition called "The Echternach Dance".
The dancing procession of Echternach is always celebrated the day after Whit Monday.
