Hugo wrote the lease for his rental, on behalf of the landlord P. Schmolle, who signed it. "I, the undersigned, declare that I rent to Mr. Victor Hugo the second furnished floor of my house, minus the smallest of the three rooms, and in addition rent to him one of the large furnished rooms on the second floor, with the concession of the right to use the kitchen and the dining room for lunch only. This rental is made by me to Mr. Victor Hugo for three months [...] for the sum of one thousand francs"...
