Iran, Qajar art, 19th century.
Arabic manuscript on paper, black and red ink on paper. 243 ff. plus 3 endpapers. 19 ll. per page, in naskh in a gold and blue frame. Titles of the suras in gold in illuminated cartouches, recalled in fleurons in the spandrels. Marginal medallions illuminated in polychrome and gold, indicating the subdivisions. Illuminated opening double-page. Bound in papier-mâché and lacquered, the inner boards decorated with a poly-lobed oval flanked by palmettes. The outer boards, decorated with bouquets, signature and date on the first board. Restorations.

Ahmad is known as an artist from Shiraz. He excelled in making portraits and decorations with birds and flowers (gul-o-bulbul). His identified works are dated between AH 1256 /1840-41 and AH 1276 /1859-60 (M. A. Karimzadeh Tabrizi, The Lives and Art of Old Painters of Iran, vol. I, London, 1985, pp. 53-54).
