Rare ensemble de seize folios d'un coran doré... Lot n° 20

* A Juz' of the same Koran in its original Mamluk binding from the collection of Cte Chandon de Birailles was sold at Tajan : Art d'orient, 8 December 2003, Paris, lot 77. Egypt or Syria, Mamluk art, 14th century Arabic manuscript on paper, 16 ff. with 5ll. per page, in a frame drawn in black ink and gilt border. Large module writing, muhaqqaq style, in gold ink and outlines drawn in black ink. Diacritical points, vowels and orthoepic signs in blue. Verses separated by golden circles filled in blue. The ten verses indicated by a marginal medallion with floral decoration gilded on a blue background and circled in gold, and blue enhanced with geometric motifs. Stains, traces of wetness, some old restorations on the margins. Text : 26 x 14.5 cm ; Page : 28.5 x 20 cm Text : Sura al-An'am (6) vv. 106-109; 114-118; 121-124; 141-151 and vv. 153-164. Surah al-Kahf (18) vv. 13-16; 41-45 and 68-78. Other manuscripts can be compared to these leaves with a gold writing style, as well as diacritical points and vowels in blue. They are attributed to Ilkhanid Iran, 14th century (David James, Manuscripts of the Holy Qur'an from the Mamluk Era, cat. 55 and 57 pp. 242-243). Similar ornamental medallions can be seen in f.2a of the Mamluk Qur'an dated AH 784 /1382-83, copied and illuminated by Ahmad ibn 'Ali al-'Ajami, which is assumed - based on its decoration - to be of Iranian origin (David James, The Master Scribes: Qur'ans of the 10th to 14th Centuries Ad, 1992, cat. 47, p.190).
