Egypt or Syria, Mamluk art, 14th century Rounded shape with convex walls. Decorated with a wide epigraphic band in thuluth, interspersed with rosettes and registers with lattice motifs. On the shoulder, a dated inscription of ownership: Sâhibihi (its owner) Mustafa Agha Ikhtiyar Javushan, muharram Sanat 1171H./September 1757. D. 35 cm; H. 20 cm Private collection, South of France. The Ottoman Aghas in Egypt became very powerful and wealthy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. "Javushan" refers to one of the seven regiments of the Turkish garrison. The title Agha of the owner of this basin suggests that he was the leader of this regiment.
