Officer's saber of light cavalry model 1822, blade slightly curved of 89 cm, with flat back and signed at the heel " Henry Wilkinson Pall Mall London " on a face and of a star with six branches with pastilles gilded with the initials HW (Henry Wilkinson), superbly engraved with the etching of acanthus and vegetable reasons, and marked in a cartouche in the center "CLÉMENT THOMAS COMMt SUPÉeur DES GARs NATes DE LA SEINE 1848", three-pronged gilt brass frame, short-tailed pommel, horn spindle, watermark missing, steel scabbard with two bracelets, stepped bowl and large sting, storage oxidation on scabbard, ex-attic condition, TL 107,5 cm France Second Republic period Jacque Léonard Clément-Thomas, known as Clément-Thomas, 1809-1871, joined the army in 1829, as a non-commissioned officer in the 9th Cuirassiers regiment, and became involved in anti-monarchist plots during the July Monarchy. Arrested in 1834, he was sentenced to deportation but managed to escape to England. He came back after the armistice of 1837, and contributed to the newspaper Le National. He was elected deputy of the Gironde to the Constituent Assembly in 1848 and commanded the National Guard of the Seine during the June 1848 revolt. Opposed to the Second Empire and having failed to be elected deputy to the National Assembly, he went into exile in Belgium and then in Luxembourg. After the fall of the Second Empire, he returned to France and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the National Guard of the Seine by the Government of National Defense. During the uprising of March 18, 1871, he left in civilian clothes to examine the barricades of Montmartre and draw up plans. Recognized by the crowd, he was shot on March 21, 1871 in Paris, rue des Rosiers.
