MARIANA. General history of Spain. From the beginning of the Monarchy until now. Taken from (Juan de) Mariana. And of the most famous authors. Paris, Pierre-Michel Huart, 1723, 9 vol. in-12°, 34 portraits, full contemporary glazed fawn calf, boards stamped in their centers with a gilt crowned monogram, spine with decorated ribs. Despite multiple small defects to the bindings, beautiful set. Juan de Mariana (1536-1624) was a Spanish Jesuit, who exerted a strong influence in the religious polemics of the 16th century, and was a follower of the theories of the monarchomatics, leaving abundant works in the historical and economic fields. Mariana's major work, "Historiae de rebus Hispaniae," was first published in Toledo in 1592; ten books were added in 1605, updating his work until the accession to the throne of Charles V in 1519. This edition received the imprimatur of the provincial in 1604. Finally, with a census of subsequent events, the authors completed the study up to the accession of Philip IV in 1621. This work was so well received that Mariana was pushed to translate it into Spanish (the first part in 1601 and the rest in 1609). Mariana's "Historiae", although partly uncritical, is esteemed for its rigorous research, sagacity and style.
