Lorenz Heister (born on September 19, 1683 in Frankfurt am Main and died on April 18, 1758 in Bornum am Elm, in the principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel) was a German anatomist, botanist and surgeon. In 1708 he obtained his doctorate at the University of Harderwijk, and in the summer of 1709 he joined the Dutch army as a field surgeon during the siege of Tournai. Shortly afterwards, he distinguished himself in the care of the wounded at the battle of Malplaquet.
