CHARLEVOIE (father of). Reissue of this work originally published in 1715, it was published at the same time in the Catholic library in Lyon by Rusand. After a description of Japan and the customs of its inhabitants, the work tells about the beginning of Christianity in Japan around the middle of the 16th century by Saint Francis Xavier. After a good reception, things deteriorate quite quickly and the first persecutions begin in 1597. In 1614, the Shogun of the TOKUGAWA dynasty banned Christianity.
