Flat desk of rectangular form in first part of engraved brass on bottom of tortoiseshell tinted brown, with inlaid decoration of foliage, tendrils and scrolls. It opens with three drawers in the belt and reveals two secret compartments. Cambered feet. Ornamentation in chased and gilded bronze such as espagnolette falls, satyr masks, falling handles, key entries in the shape of a pelted shield, clawed and foliated sabots, framing moldings, lingotiere and clasps. Tray mounted with keys, brown leather top gilded with small irons. Louis XIV style, composed of old elements, after a model of André Charles Boulle. H. 81 cm. - L. : 201 cm. - D. : 98 cm. The flat desk we present is based on the famous model executed by Charles-André Boulle (1642-1732) around 1715 for the Duke of Bourbon, in Chantilly. The historically significant bureau-platte was seized during the French Revolution and kept in the Garde-Meuble until 1834, when it was sent to Versailles and placed in the Cabinet du Conseil by Louis-Philippe until it was finally returned to Chantilly in 2012 and housed in the Musée Condé (inv. VMB 960). An elevation drawing of a nearly identical bureau-platte by Boulle and executed by Gilles-Marie Oppenord shows a slight variation in the central frieze drawer from the example executed for the Duc de Bourbon. This drawing is now in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt, New York (inv. 1921-22-196). A comparable flat desk from the Robert de Balkany collection was auctioned in Paris (Sotheby's, September 20, 2016, lot 76). Specimen made with marine turtle shell spp (Cheloniidae spp) (I/A-CE) pre-convention Specimen prior to June 1, 1947 thus conforming to the EC Rule 338/97 of 09/12/1996 art.2-W mc, conforming to the French Environment Code (prior to the application of the AM relating to the protection of marine turtles). For an exit of the EU a CITES of re-export will be necessary, this one being in charge of the future purchaser. (A wooden case).
