17th century FLEMISH SCHOOL
Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy
Oil on copper, some traces of soiling
22 x 16 cm
Wooden frame and gilded stucco with foliage motif
The motif is inspired by the life of Saint Mary Magdalene the sinner in the Golden Legend of Jacques de Voragine (c. 1228 1298). Retired to a cave above Marseille, "every day the angels lifted her into the air, where for an hour she heard their music" (T. 2, pp.16-23. Ed. Diane de Selliers 2000)
