Famous for his pastoral scenes, Jean-Baptiste Huet was also an appreciated portraitist. He made in particular a portrait of his wife called The Reader, in black stone and red chalk, engraved by Gilles Demarteau.
Our drawing was also engraved by Demarteau as part of a series on fashion (see anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Dassault, December 18, 2014, (Artcurial) n°337, reproduced).
