Within the large body of work created by François Rude, The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792, which adorns the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile, holds a major place. The revolutionary event is celebrated by a representation with an antique look in which the Marseillaise or the Victory, under the features of a female allegory, overhangs a group of warriors, among which is our Gallic. Imbued with strong emotion and vivacity, this central figure of the composition unveiled in 1836, embodies a timeless warrior force.
