The fortunate occasion.
Oil on panel.
27 x 37 cm.
Wooden frame and gilded plaster with rocaille decoration (accidents, small missing parts).
This composition was engraved by Scotin II around 1718-1729 after a lost work by Nicolas Lancret, which was a counterpart to the Charmes de la conversation (see G. Wildenstein, Lancret, Paris, 1924, n° 275, reproduced fig. 70).
The engraving was accompanied by the verses:
"In the shade of these woods to dance in her turn
Iris to her shepherd stretches her adorable hand
Tirsis to take advantage of the favorable moment
Shake it and declare her love to him at the moment....".
