Heirs of HOMANN
Insulae Corsicae olim Cyrnus dictae novissima facies chorographice. Nuremberg, 1732.
Watercolor engraving.
53 x 45 cm (at sight).
Map of Corsica decorated with a title cartouche in the mouth of a sea monster. On one side, a sailor holds a probe, and on the other, a Triton riding a fish and holding a Corsican flag with a Moorish head, sounds the marine Conch (the colombo); at the head of the cartouche, a soldier of the Imperial Army, behind him, a fox (representing Genoa), protects himself from the Corsicans in revolt. The sea is decorated with ships and two battle scenes, one between a French ship and a Genoese ship, the other showing a Corsican galley adorned with flags with a Moor's head pursuing a ship that it is gunning.
Homann and his heirs were publishers of maps in Nuremberg and held a leading position in the German cartography market for over a hundred years.
