A major painter of lyrical abstraction, he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1937, after the aesthetic shock of Picasso's Guernica. In 1949, after his first solo exhibition at Samuel Bing's Paris gallery, he became one of the leading figures of the Ecole de Paris. Olivier Debré is the grandson of the painter Edouard Debat-Ponsan, the son of Professor Robert Debré, whose name is on a Paris hospital, and the brother of Michel Debré, General de Gaulle's first minister.
