Les fais maistre Alain Chartier, notaire et secrétaire du Roy Charles VIe, (au colophon) printed in Paris, by maistre Pierre Le Caron, on the 5th day of September 1489, 2 parts bound in one vol. pet. in-4, of 159 (out of 161), the first part in 77 ff. (title included) - 1 blank f. after the last f. k. - the 2nd part in 82 ff. (of 84), gothic type on two columns, full navy blue morocco, ribbed spine, red morocco lining with large lace framing the boards, gilt tr. (Lortic, circa 1850). ORIGINAL and INCUNABLE EDITION of great rarity, illustrated with a grotesque L on the title in 4 lines, on f.2 one sees the author on his bed (wood repeated twice with the bubbles Entendement and Mélancolie), of an engraved genealogy of the kings of France. According to Bechtel, there are 2 editions of the Fais published by Pierre le Caron in 1489, our copy is type B (second edition). Alain Chartier, a poet from Bayeux, was secretary to the Dauphin and then to Charles VII at the court of Bourges. Besides Chartier, it contains the original edition of the 7 ballads of the Regime de Fortune by Taillevent (1390-1458) as well as the ballad de Bon conseil by François Villon (1431-1480). Missing 2 ff. in the 2nd part b4 and b5. Ex-libris François Richaudeau, Bibliotheca Ambrosii Firmini Didoti. Traces of moisture on the boards. Washed copy. Bechtel C-270.
