BOOK OF HOURS FOR THE USE OF EVREUX France (Paris/Rouen?), 1460-1470 in Latin and French, illuminated manuscript on parchment 77 ff; 185 x 130 mm (100 x 65 mm); on parchment; 15 long lines in carbon, red, blue, and gold ink; red ink rules; modern foliation in pencil; textualis formata; 7 full-page miniatures Secondary decorations: frames with zoomorphic motifs, flowers and acanthus leaves; painted lettering on three lines; gilded lettering with alternating red and blue backgrounds; endpapers; rubrics. Binding pastiche of the nineteenth century, full tan basane, spine with 4 nerves with title and small iron with ermine pattern in the entrenerfs, plates decorated with fleur-de-lys, three central and at the corners, clasps, small rubs on the corners, necks, headings and nerves. Hours for the use of Evreux produced in Paris around 1465 by an artist following the Master François. Matins and the beginning of Lauds are missing, inc. Quoniam deum magnum..."; f.30: Prime (antiphon "O admirabile", capitula "Sancta et immaculata virginitas", f.35r: Tierce: leaf with miniature missing - f.37v: Sexte - f.41r: None (antiphon "Germinavit" and capitula "Felix namque es") - f.43v: Vespers - 45r: Compline. - ff. 50r-60r: Penitential Psalms: First leaf missing with the miniature of David. - ff. 60r-63v: Litany and petitions - ff. 64r-67r: Hours of the Cross - ff. 67v-70r: Hours of the Holy Spirit - ff. 70r-71v: Gospel pericopes for Saint John only. - ff. 71v-75r: Obsecro te - ff. 71v-77r: Stabat mater dolorosa ICONOGRAPHY The manuscript seems to have been produced in Parisian (or Rouen?) workshops around 1460. The faces with very pronounced features may remind one of the style of Master Francis, but the simplicity of the details suggests rather the work of a follower.
