Armand Jean Le Bouthillier de Rancé, known as the Abbé de Rancé, godson of Cardinal de Richelieu, was a son of Denis Le Bouthillier de Rancé, private secretary to Queen Marie de Médicis. Canon of the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris and commendatory abbot of five monasteries, including that of La Trappe, he was an important figure in the spiritual life of the 17th century.
