MONTAIGNE (MICHEL DE) Les Essais, nouvelle édition enrichie et augmentée Paris, Rondet, Journel, Chevillon, 1669. 3 vol. in-12, I : [34] ff. with engraved title, 556 pp., [12] ff. - II : engraved title, [1] f. of table, 827 pp, [15] ff. out of 23 - III : engraved title, [1] f. of table, 610 pp, [17] ff, blond calf, arms on the boards, spine with ornamented nerves, red edges (Binding of the time). Tchemerzine VIII, 439. Nice reprint of the interesting Parisian edition published by Journel in 1659; it had appeared increased with translations and the names of the quoted authors, with the preface of Marie de Gournay and the dedication to the cardinal of Richelieu. This edition of 1669 remains precious because it is the last one of the XVIIth century to keep the title "Essays", before the condemnation of the work by Rome and its putting on the Index. It is decorated with an engraved title by Matheus, repeated, with the portrait of the author and his motto "Que scay-je". The first volume contains the engraved title of the 1659 edition, signed Nicolas de Larmessin. Nice and rare copy with arms, coming from the library of Jean Le Camus (1637-1710). Successively councillor at the Cour des Aides, maître des requêtes, intendant of Auvergne and civil lieutenant at the Châtelet of Paris (OHR, pl. 2199), he was the younger brother of the bishop of Grenoble Étienne Le Camus. Volume I, ff. iiIX and iiX have been bound at the end of the volume by mistake. Volume II, 2 ff. of the final quire misplaced: Nnv placed before Nniv, Nnvii placed before Nnvi. Tchemerzine announces 23 ff. for this final table, our copy has 15, gathering the complete table of contents and the privilege. Rubbing, light spotting, discreet restorations.
