Signed in Latin letters Le Pho and two Chinese characters and bearing the artist's stamp in the upper right, title of the work and n° 8 written in pencil on the back. 64,1 x 44,9 cm. (Some fading). Certificate of Mr Alain Le Kim, successor of the painter Le Pho, dated May 9, 2022. Provenance : Acquired during the exhibitions of Le Pho in Casablanca in 1942. Then by descent to the present owner. Private collection from Bordeaux. Le Pho's first creative period began during his studies at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts (1925-1930). He did the Victor Tardieu (1870-1937), professor and director of the institution, who will influence him durably. In the early 1930s, Le Pho used a new technique: ink and gouache on silk mounted on cardboard. He mastered this technique perfectly and quickly found his own styles and subjects. Elegant Tonkinese women and flowers are one of the most representative subjects of his first period of creation (late 20's to 1945). Our painting is clearly a representative work of the peak of his first period. A graceful seated woman in front of the flowing curtains, holding carnations, fine face, green traditional dress (ao dai), a jadeite bracelet, etc., are painted in subtle tones. Pho was also a great connoisseur of flowers, reproducing them in almost every work, whether in vases or planters or in nature surrounding figures. His works maintain a delicate balance between scientific vision and artistic conception, which is not monotonous, but full of emotion. This work was commissioned especially for his two exhibitions in Casablanca in 1942. It bears his title and N° 8 on the back, as well as the indications concerning the creation of the work, written by the artist himself. Lot presented by Mrs Qinghua Yin, Philippe Delalande expertise, expert in Asian Art.
