Trần Tấn Lộc (1906-1968) was born in the village of Lủ, Thanh Tri district, in Hanoi. Graduated in the Decoration section of the National School of Handicrafts in Hanoi, he most likely frequented the students of the Indochina School of Fine Arts. In 1930, at the age of 24, he won the second prize in the Saigon poster competition organized by the director of the Indochina Beer and Ice Company (Brasseries et Glacières de l’Indochine). As for his younger brother, Tran Tan Hoi, then aged 19, he won the 3rd prize. The work presented today comes from a box full of drawings from Alix Aymé’s studio. She settled in Hanoi in 1921 and taught drawing at the technical high school. Noticed at the Colonial Exhibition, this student of Maurice Denis was a teacher at the Albert Sarraut High School in the 1930s. She became involved with the Indochina School of Fine Arts where she actively supported Joseph Inguimberty in teaching the art of lacquer.
