NASA. View of the lunar soil by the space probe LUNAR ORBITER IV (Frame #187) realized during its 33rd lunar orbit during its photographic mission around the Moon on June 2, 1967. Thanks to a complex mechanism of shooting, developing, scanning in lunar orbit, the data can then be tele-transmitted to Earth from the Moon and developed by the NASA laboratory. This shot was taken at a height of 1690 miles above the lunar surface. The selenographic coordinates of the site are approximately: 89° West longitude and 15° South Latitude. The dark pool in the lower left of the photograph is "EASTERN MARE" which has a diameter of approximately 186 miles. The irregular dark area stretching in length is "MARE VERIS" (Spring Sea), which lies at the foot of the "ROOK MOUNTAINS". This large basin is interpreted to have been created by the impact of a large meteorite and is only filled in by more recent volcanic eruptions. Vintage silver print.
