Some quires of volume II uniformly foxed). Provenance : Stamp end of XIXth century "Pierre Doyen, doctor in Mende". First edition of the complete works of Vesalius, founder of modern anatomy. This monumental edition is given by two of the most learned physicians of the XVIIIth century, Hermann Boerhaave and Bernhard Albinus. It is illustrated with 38 in-text vignettes, and 82 copper-engraved plates by Jan Wandelaar, a pupil of Folkema and Gérard de Lairesse, based on the xylographs of the De humani corporis fabrica, whose first edition, in 1543, earned Vesalius the appointment as court physician of Charles V. Some of these plates, such as the frontispiece representing Vesalius' public dissection lesson, are among the most famous in medical iconography. Well completed with the portrait of Vesalius, attributed to Titian. Good condition inside. The binding, of good quality, requires a skilful restoration. Expert : Mr Jean-Paul Veyssière.
