REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 1669) - "Christ before Pilate, large plate". 1636. Rare original etching and drypoint. Proof on watermarked laid paper (letter B in a large rosary). Ref: Barstch, n°77. Hind, n°143. New Hollstein, n°155. Beautiful impression. Rare. 53 x 43.6 cm approximately. Condition B (cut at the border and inside the subject in places, some printing creases and a few short tears formerly restored). In this composition, Rembrandt added a self-portrait in the upper center behind the group of men on the terrace to the left of Christ (the head with the feathered hat). This masterpiece, one of Rembrandt's greatest copperworks, would have been executed over the course of two years. Until the 19th century, "Christ before Pilate" and its counterpart "The Descent from the Cross" were considered two of the artist's most beautiful engravings.
