FRENCH SCHOOL OF THE XIXTH CENTURY Portrait of Joseph de Monteil in the uniform of a marshal of camp wearing the cross of knight of the Legion of Honor, knight of the Order of Saint-Louis and the decoration of the Lily. Oil on canvas with oval view. Wooden frame and gilded stucco decorated with palmettes and laurel branches in the spandrels. Old handwritten label in ink on the back "Joseph de Monteil son of Jacques and Marie-Magdeleine de Rampan du Breuil. Born in St. Chély d'Apcher on May 7, 1762, died in St. Chély on .... Marechal de Camp. Knight of St. Louis. Knight of the Legion of Honor. Uncle and adoptive father of Jean-Victor de Monteil, our grandfather." 63 x 51,5 cm (at sight) 85 x 73,5 cm B.E. Biographies : Joseph de MONTEIL (Chély d'Apcher,1762-1826). Son of Jacques de Monteil, chief of battalion, killed at the passage of the Berezina (November 28 or 29, 1812) and of Marie Magdeleine Rampan. He was made: -Chevalier de Saint-Louis. -Knight of the Legion of Honor on June 14, 1804. -Knight of the Empire on October 6, 1810. -Colonel-Major on April 21, 1813, 4th Regiment (Lyon) of the Honor Guard. Seriously wounded at Austerlitz and then at Jena, he died on March 29, 1826 at Saint-Chély d'Apcher.
