DEVOTION STAND in white earthenware bas-relief and polychrome decoration blue, green and yellow: the Virgin and Child is seated in an architectural decoration of pilasters. At the top a pediment of foliage and two angels facing each other. On each side of the Virgin stand: Saint John the Baptist and an evangelist. Inscription on the back in hollow under glaze: Monastero S° Antonio di Padova 1530 Probably Nevers, 17th century. Height : 42 cm - Width : 27 cm (Firing cracks, visible enamel breaks) It is very likely that these types of earthenware altarpieces, of which we find a few rare similar examples, are reinterpretations of the Nivernais produced by earthenware artisans who came from Italy with the advent of the Gonzaga family to the duchy of Nevers at the end of the 16th century.
