PHARAON'S TITLE " SA RÊ " fragment in cream marmoreal hard stone with inclusion of granitic veins representing two hieroglyphs carved in hollow: the hieroglyph of the duck (Sa) and that of the sun-god (Ra) literally meaning " the son of the Sun God ". This official title of pharaoh is systematically associated with his cartouche, linking him to the cosmic power of the universe. Ancient Egypt, probably New Kingdom 18th - 20th Dynasty (1550/1069 BC) Height : 24 cm - Width : 24,5 cm - Depth : 5,5 cm (Trace of old polychromy) The name Sa-Ra, which means " son of Ra" , is one of the five names that have been part of the title of the pharaohs since Khafren. PROVENANCE Collected (or received as a gift) by Apollinaire Lebas (1797-1873), a naval engineer who led the expedition to bring back and erect the Luxor obelisk on the Place de la Concorde. Kept to this day by the descendants of Apollinaire Lebas. Note: it is interesting to note that the same title " Sa Rê " is found twenty times sculpted on the obelisk of the Place de la Concorde that Apollinaire Lebas, the first owner of our fragment, brought back in 1836. Only the north (Madeleine side) and west (Champs Elysées side) facades offer the "Sa-Rê" in the same direction as ours (looking to the left), the two other facades presenting hieroglyphs looking to the right.
