The sun is shining in the background of the cave (tunnel linking Naples to Pozzuoli), illuminating the figures in the foreground, some of them moving towards the light.

It is known that these compositions were conceived during his first trip to Naples in the spring of 1760 with the abbot Saint Non, some painted on the spot and others on his return.
There are five other variants in oil:
- Rouen, Musée des Beaux-Arts.
- Paris, Musée du Petit Palais.
- A plate painted in the prison of Saint Lazare, Stukker sale, Bern 1990.
