An early version of the sketch by Peter - Paul Rubens of similar dimensions (44 x 38 cm) kept in the Boymans - van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, preparatory to the painting in the Sarasota Museum (Cf. Michael Jaffé. Rubens. Catalogo completo, n°1028 & 1029 - Rizzoli 1989).
These studies and the paintings (107 x 126.5 cm) served as models for a suite of eight tapestry cartoons dedicated to the Life of Achilles.
