CAVIGIOLI (Giovanni Battista). Book of the properties of vinegar. Poictiers, A l'enseigne du Pelican [Jean et Enguilbert de Marnef], 1541. In-16, 19th century red morocco, triple fillet, ornate spine, interior roulettes, gilt edges (E. Niedrée). (40) ff. of which the last one is blank. First edition, of extreme rarity, of the first book entirely dedicated to vinegar. The work of a Sicilian physician who practiced in France for 32 years, this book describes all the virtues of vinegar from an essentially medical point of view: "it helps to pass water when one lacks wine because (as Hippocrates testifies) pure water cannot go down the estomach, it disinfects, it is a diuretic, it is effective against the plague, it is sovereign to help lose weight". Cavigioli insists on the fact that wine makes the best vinegar. Only two other copies of this book are known, one in the BnF, the other in the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda (USA). Minor restorations to the last blank leaf. Ex-libris E. Cesbron. Ex-libris Ex-museo Docteur Bernard. Durling, 903 - Répert. livr. fr. XVIth c., 5 (Poitiers) p. 27 n° 31 - La Bouralière, Poitiers XVIth c. p. 97.
