ALBERTUS MAGNUS. Albert Le Grand translate from Latin into French : which deals with the virtue of Herbs, & precious stones, & similarly of beasts & birds. Paris, Nicolas Bonfons, 1576. Rare early edition of this famous collection of secrets, akin to witchcraft, concerning the virtues of herbs, stones, animals ... attributed to the twelfth century philosopher Albert the Great. "The work was probably written by Henry of Saxony, a disciple of Albert, or by Thomas of Cantimpré. All early editions of this collection are rare" (Oberlé). A precious copy from prestigious collectors: it belonged to the facetious Dijon writer Étienne Tabourot (1549-1590), the famous author of Bigarrures et des Touches du Seigneur des Accords, who affixed his handwritten bookplate on the title and his motto: À tous accords. Then, it belonged to the libraries of the bibliophile and veterinarian Huzard (with his wet stamp on the verso of the title: Huzard de l'Institut), and of Pierre Saintyves (handwritten ex-libris on the verso of the title and at the beginning of the text, in pen), pseudonym of the bookseller and publisher Émille Nourry. Binding slightly rubbed. Small angular spotting, some foxing. Staining to the title, with small tears. Oberlé, Fastes, 1060 (1740).
