110. Tapestry of the Royal Manufacture of Aubusson, around 1750, Youth. Workshop of Picon, woven in wool and silk from a hanging of the Four Ages of Life after Nicolas Lancret (1690-1743). 240 x 320 cm. Youth is associated here with spring as the season of love with couples of young people forming and the game of papegai. In this game, the archers had to hit a bird-shaped target made of wood or cardboard at the top of a vertical pole (this game is still played in the North). The weavers of Aubusson based their work on the engravings of Nicolas de Larmessin after the paintings of Nicolas Lancret. A border with a scroll motif frames the tapestry. Coat of arms are present in the upper part. Marked M.R DAUBUSSON, F (or P) PICON - Youth. Good general condition, bright colors, some restorations and weaknesses in the silks. Two armorial tapestries of the hanging of the ages, L'adolescence (230 x 350 cm) and La jeunesse (250 x 328 cm), with the mark M.R. DAUBUSSON F (or P) PICON, were sold in Paris, Galerie Charpentier, on June 8 and 9, 1959 (n° 286 and 287, ill). Bibliography : Pascal-François Bertrand, Aubusson, Tapestries of the Enlightenment, Snoeck 2013 (cf. p. 63 to 65 and p. 77).
