HAUVEL, Charles. From Paris to Marseille - 6 hours journey - Price of seats: 4 Francs. Paris: Charles Hauvel, Ingénieur; Paris: Imprimerie Morris Père et Fils, 1872. First edition, in-12; 36 pages. Bound in later blue half cloth, spine with long title, marbled boards, with the original printed cover fully preserved. Irregular foxing, otherwise in very good condition. A novel of anticipation in which a father and his son make a trip from Paris to Timbuktu in a flying machine, starting with the trip from Paris to Marseille, then after a change of aircraft to Algiers and Timbuktu. The dialogue between father and son is an opportunity to discuss the theory and practice of the operation of aircraft, which are propelled by articulated wings like birds. The author Charles Hauvel, an engineer from the Ecole Centrale, was a prolific inventor: cycle-skates or one-wheeled velociferes, elastic bridle for meteorological kites, and flying apparatus with flapping wings driven by a pedal. Very rare and curious booklet, of which only one copy is reported to the CCFR.
