On the back of the mount, the engraving of the drawing 18.5 x 14.5 cm
Our drawing is preparatory to the etching of the same name. This composition is part of a set of ten etchings collected under the title Divers Ajustements et Usages de Russie, dated 1764 (see the catalog of the exhibition Jean-Baptiste Le Prince, Metz, Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, 1988, n° 55).
Leprince worked in Russia from 1758, where he mainly made door tops for the Winter Palace. He also illustrated at this period the work of the abbot Chappe d'Auteroche, Voyage en Sibérie.
The Prince brought back to France many drawings from life and "folkloric" objects which he was to use later. He was admitted to the Academy in 1765, with The Russian Baptism (see Op. cit. supra, n° 25, reproduced).
The Prince is also the inventor of the process of engraving "en manière de lavis", or aquatint.
