L.A.S. "Lyonel Feininger", San Francisco, Hotel Victoria, September 2, 1937, addressed to a friend [Mrs. MORLEY, director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art], with a printed drawing of a church. 1 page in-4, in German (tears and restoration). A farewell to an unnamed friend. Mrs. Morley, director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, told him the previous day that his correspondent had already left, and Feininger enjoins the latter to write to him as soon as he takes a few days' rest "in the East." - In early June 1937, Feininger had emigrated to the United States, first to New York and then to California, where he gave a series of lectures during summer school at Mills College (Oakland). A few days after writing this letter, he returned to New York. At the same time, more than 400 of Feininger's works were being removed from museums in Nazi Germany, some of which were shown at the Degenerate Art Exhibition. - The woodcut at the top is listed in Prasse W 261.
