MONTPENSIER (Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, duchess of). Memoirs of Mademoiselle de Montpensier, daughter of Mr. Gaston d'Orléans, brother of Louis XIII. King of France. Amsterdam, Bernard, 1729. 6 vol. in-12, brown calf, spine with ornate nerves (period binding). Some gnawing and loss of leather on the spines and on some boards, some rubbing, corners worn. Daughter of Gaston d'Orléans, Anne-Marie-Louise (1627-1693), duchess of Montpensier, known as the Grande Mademoiselle, thought of marrying Louis XIV, but Mazarin opposed her. She went over to the side of the Fronde in 1651, returned to the court in 1657, and after years of waiting was able to marry Lauzun, from whom she soon separated to live in devotion. Second edition, without the 7th supplement volume that is sometimes found with some copies (but quite complete in itself, with final mention of 6th and last volume). Frontispiece and portrait, 10 figures out of text and a folding map in fine. - STAAL de LAUNAY (Marguerite-Jeanne Cordier, Baroness), Memoirs of Madame de Staal, written by herself. New edition. London and Paris, Rozet, 1767. 3 vol. in-11 marbled calf, spines decorated, title and tom. pages in red and green marble (period binding). Some rubbing, one endpaper browned. Ex-libris of Basonnière. - SENAC DE MEILHAN (Gabriel), Memoirs of Anne de Gonzagues, princess palatine. London and Paris, by the merchants of novelties, 1786. In-8, marbled basane, smooth spine decorated (period binding). First edition of these apocryphal memoirs on the life of Anne de Gonzagues (1616-1684), who took an active part in the troubles of the Fronde, before marrying in 1645 Prince Edward of Bavaria, fifth son of the Elector Palatine. The story runs until the arrest of Cardinal de Retz. Worm work in lower margin, light marginal spotting in places. I.E. A SET OF 12 VOLUMES.
