Rare first edition of this translation by Nicolas Gueudeville (1652- ca. 1721, Benedictine convert to Calvinism, historian and pamphleteer); and first printing of the engraved figures after Holbein. The illustration entirely engraved on copper consists of a plate representing the portraits of Erasmus, Holbein and Thomas More, an allegorical frontispiece, 75 vignettes in the text and 6 folding plates after Holbein's drawings. Arms of Jean de Bye, burgomaster of Leiden, engraved on copper at the head of the dedication. Pages 297 to 312 contain the Publisher's Catalogue. Two vignettes replaced by a better impression on the back, pages 231 and 234.
