CHAVAILLE (Jacques de) : Moral and political observations in the form of maxims on the lives of illustrious men. Paris, Denys Langlois, 1641; in 8°, soft vellum of the time. Very rare first edition. It is decorated with a very beautiful frontispiece and a portrait of the cardinal of Richelieu, engraved by N. Picart. This work is a collection of moral thoughts from the Lives of the illustrious men of Antiquity (Pompey, Cato of Uthica, Caesar, Phocion etc). Attached : [DENESLE] : L'Aristippe moderne, ou Réflexions sur les moeurs du siècle. Frankfurt, J. F. Bassompierre, 1757; in 12, modern cased cardboard, red chagrin title. Title in black and red, engraved frontispiece and title vignette. Denesle signs the dedicatory epistle of the second edition. Work in the taste of La Bruyère of which the author openly claims in his preface.
