Limoges circa 1530 - Paris 1584
Presumed portrait of Philippes de Montespédon (? - 1578) princess of La Roche-sur-Yon, duchess of Beaupreau, widow of Charles de Bourbon - Montpensier (circa 1570).
She is dressed in a dress richly decorated with pearls, with a large strawberry, and wearing a widow's headdress.
Black stone, blur and red chalk. Glued on sheet (Small tear at the bottom towards the middle; damp stains and foxing, especially in the lower part; small punctures).
In top on the right: Mf DE LA ROCHE SV YON/23
H. 34 - L. 23,5 cm
Analogy: The National Library keeps another version of this portrait by Jean Decourt, probably earlier, of the same dimensions (34,2 x 23,8 cm) in which the model looks ahead, out of the frame, and whose dress, with the collar of the dress slightly open, seems somewhat more sober (Recueil de l'Anonyme
Lécurieux).
The Musée Condé in the Château de Chantilly has a portrait by François Clouet and a workshop representing the Princess de la Roche
- sur - Yon done some twenty years earlier, around 1550 (See
Alexandra Zvereva, Portraits dessinés de la cour des Valois. Les
Clouet de Catherine de Médicis, n° 366, pp. 350 & 351 - Arthena 2011).
