This oil on canvas, as well as two other paintings also in grisaille depicting the Roman emperor (see G. M. Ackerman, Jean Léon Gérôme, Paris, 2000, p. 252 - 253, n°142 and 143), were made by Gérôme around 1863 for the illustration of the second volume of the History of Julius Caesar by Napoleon III.
